Dear Albany Community,
Last weekend we officially “opened” the new Cougar Field and Track with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, pictured above. Senior Sean Morello, a member of our State Champion Cross Country team, gave a heartening speech about what the new track means to athletes, both physically and mentally. Students spoke out strongly in favor of the track and field renovations last spring. It isn’t easy to join an adult conversation when you are a teen, but our students did that with courage and intelligence. One of my personal goals has been to create clearer pathways throughout the District for listening to student voices. For example, there are seats for student members on all of the Board-appointed committees. I am also excited about the new Student Advocacy Committee, which was created by our students.
Environmental Action Plan
Albany Unified has a responsibility to do what we can to combat climate change. Our 2016 commitment to “green” building standards has ensured that all of the new facilities meet high standards for ventilation and natural lighting. Now, the District’s Environmental Action Plan Committee has produced an Environmental Action Master Plan Draft, addressing a broad range of issues. The Master Plan Draft will be discussed at a Special Workshop Meeting of the Board of Education. Comments are welcome, either through this form, participating in the Workshop (it is an in-person only meeting), or by sending an email to the Board or me. Celebracion Latina!
To cap the District’s month-long observance of Hispanic / Latino Heritage Month, Familias Latinas de Albany is hosting a Celebracion! There will be food trucks, bands, dancing, and more. Everyone is invited on October 15 from 12–4pm at Albany Middle School for this festive afternoon. For the past four weeks, this dedicated group of parents has produced gorgeous newsletters with topics of interest, country facts, and even recipes. They have also organized parent volunteers to go into classrooms for a special read-aloud of Pepe and the Parade.
Tragic Events
I feel that I cannot close this Update without acknowledging that although we have had a great week in Albany, our neighbors in Berkeley and Oakland, and across the world, have suffered tragic losses due to gun violence. Our thoughts go out to all of those affected by the senseless loss of young lives.

Estimada comunidad de Albany,
El fin de semana pasado "abrimos" oficialmente el nuevo Cougar Field and Track con una ceremonia de corte de cinta, que se muestra arriba. Plan de Acción Ambiental

¡Celebración Latina!
Para culminar la observancia de un mes de duración del Mes de la Herencia Hispana/Latina del Distrito, Familias Latinas de Albany está organizando una Celebración! Habrá camiones de comida, bandas, baile y más. Todos están invitados el 15 de octubre de 12 a 4 p. m. en la escuela secundaria de Albany para esta tarde festiva. Durante las últimas cuatro semanas, este dedicado grupo de padres ha producido magníficos boletines informativos con temas de interés, datos sobre países e incluso recetas . También han organizado a padres voluntarios para que vayan a las aulas para una lectura especial en voz alta de Pepe and the Parade.
Eventos trágicos
Siento que no puedo cerrar esta Actualización sin reconocer que aunque hemos tenido una gran semana en Albany, nuestros vecinos en Berkeley y Oakland, y en todo el mundo, han sufrido pérdidas trágicas debido a la violencia armada. 上周末，我们通过剪彩仪式正式“开放”了新的美洲狮球场和赛道，如上图所示。我们的州冠军越野队成员肖恩·莫雷洛（Sean Morello）大四就新赛道对运动员的身心意义发表了令人振奋的演讲。去年春天，学生们强烈支持田径改造。青少年时期加入成人对话并不容易，但我们的学生以勇气和智慧做到了这一点。我的个人目标之一是在整个学区创建更清晰的途径来倾听学生的声音。例如，所有董事会任命的委员会都有学生成员的席位。我也对由我们的学生创建的新的学生倡导委员会感到兴奋。
环境行动计划

庆祝拉丁！
