Dear Albany Community,
I have two important reminders for you this week. As the District is closed tomorrow, this Update is going out on Thursday instead of Friday.
United Against Hate
Albany will be celebrating United Against Hate Week November 13–19. United Against Hate Week is a call for seven days of local civic action by people in every community to stop the hate and implicit biases that are a threat to the safety and civility of our neighborhoods, towns, and cities. The City of Albany and the Alameda County Library Albany branch are partnering on two film screenings (listed below) and a contest this year. Albany Unified is united against hate every day, and we strongly support this effort to remind us all that the responsibility to create a better world lies within us.
Friday is Veterans Day
Tomorrow, Friday, November 11 is Veterans Day, and all schools and offices will be closed. I hope you enjoy the long weekend, but I will also ask that you take a moment with your family to reflect on the meaning of this day. In 2016, then-President Barack Obama made this statement in his address at Arlington National Cemetery, “On Veterans Day, we acknowledge, humbly, that we can never serve our veterans in quite the same way that they served us. But we can try. We can practice kindness. We can pay it forward. We can volunteer. We can serve. We can respect one another. We can always get each other’s backs.” As we move forward in this school year, let’s keep those values in mind.
