Black History Month is in full swing, and next Wednesday, February 15, is our Black History Month Celebration. All are invited, please come and support our students, get inspired, and be entertained. Below, see some brief examples of how each school is highlighting Black history.
Black History Month Commemorations
AHS/MacGregor kicked off the month with Black Student Union (BSU) President Cynthia Kamau reading aloud the District’s Resolution on Black History Month to the entire student body. She was also invited to Albany’s City Council meeting to officially receive the city’s proclamation recognizing and honoring Black History Month. Throughout the month, BSU students will be sharing poems and quotes as part of the daily announcements. Many teachers have developed lessons to celebrate Black history in their different subject matter areas. Next week, the BSU, along with the District’s Black Parent Advisory group, will be hosting a lunchtime activity.
AMS got all students involved this week with a very original set of Spirit Days. Monday students wore shades of brown, and today was Black-out Day with students encouraged to wear all black. On other days featured professional attire and college gear. During announcements, members of the Black Alliance Club are reading pieces about the achievements of young African-Americans. Here is an incredible list of quotes from Black Americans that was included in the AMS Weekly Bulletin.
Third grade students at Cornell are studying the Civil Rights Movement, as many young students aren’t aware of this part of history. It leads directly into our local history—how the Civil Rights Movement helped lead the way for the Free Speech Movement, the Black Panther Party, the Indians of All Tribes occupying Alcatraz, the creation of Ethnic Studies curriculum, and more. Ocean View students are learning about important Black historical figures both in the past and current day. Classes are doing themed art projects, as well as reading and writing poems. Marin students have been studying African American heroes such as Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, Garrett Morgan, Mae Jemison, Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, Christine Darden, and Dorothy Vaughan. For their Californian of the Month, Marin is highlighting Shelton Johnson and Betty Reid Soskin, two park rangers who use their position to highlight Black contributions to our parks system.
AHS Jazz Band Wins Festival
The Albany High School Jazz Ensembles played at the Folsom Jazz Festival last week. This competitive event is the largest educational jazz festival in California. The Albany High Jazz Band took First Place in the AAA Division and qualified for the evening Finals performance, where they ranked among the highest placing bands. Watch part of their performance here. Band Director Craig Bryant could not attend due to illness, and wishes to thank the outstanding chaperones and student leaders who stepped up to make this experience possible. Special thanks to Mr. Rich Chisholm (AMS Band teacher), who led the students. You can see these talented musicians in person at the Mid-Winter Jazz Concert next Tuesday, February 13, at 7pm in the AHS Little Theater.
Board Meeting Date/Location Change
The Board of Education meeting originally scheduled for February 14 has been moved to February 16. It will take place in the Cornell Elementary Multipurpose Room and will not be available on Zoom or be videotaped. Those features are only available for meetings in the City of Albany Council Chambers.

AHS Jazz Band gana festival
