Dear Albany Community,
Black-Out Spirit Week has been happening at Albany Middle School, with students wearing college gear from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Every day for the month of February, AMS is showing a video or film about the Black experience at lunch. These efforts are a celebration, but they also mark an effort to be fully inclusive of historically marginalized groups in our society. The City of Albany shares that goal. They are working with a social impact consulting firm that specializes in racial and social equity, on the development of a city-wide survey that will give us greater insight and provide data for building the right equity-centered solutions for Albany. Later this spring, the City will be soliciting input from everyone living, working, going to school, and/or visiting Albany.
Scammers Are Everywhere
Sadly, I must let you know that earlier this week, the parent of a Berkeley Unified School District student received a hoax phone call claiming their child had been kidnapped by the caller who demanded money. In fact, the child had not been kidnapped and was safe in class. This is terrifying for any parent. Although scams like this are uncommon, I want to provide a resource so we can all be more prepared. ConnectSafely offers these tips:
- Stay calm if you suspect you have been contacted by someone running this scam. The scammer uses fear and deception to destabilize their victims and convince them that the threat is real.
- Do not give the caller any personally identifying information, like your name, your location, or your loved one’s name or information.
- If you suspect you have received a scam call, the FBI advises hanging up.
- If you decide to remain on the line and another person is around, tell them to call 911 while you’re talking to the scammer. If you’re alone, discreetly call 911 from another phone, if possible, and let the 911 operator hear the call through your cellphone’s speaker. You can briefly put the scammer on mute to speak with the 911 operator, who may ask you for your loved one’s phone number.
- As soon as you can, try to reach your loved one.
Congratulations To Albany High Students!
The Albany High School Science Olympiad Team won fourth place at the Bay Area Regional Science Olympiad! They will now advance on to the Norcal State Championships. Both the AHS Girls and Boys Soccer teams made it to the TCAL finals, and will continue to the North Coast Section tournament. Congratulations to these fine students!
Measure G Voting Is Happening Now
Measure G is on the March 5, 2024 Presidential Primary Ballot and you may have already received your vote-by-mail ballot. Surprisingly, Albany schools are funded far below the state average of $18,793/per attending student. We receive only $15,681, due to a combination of factors. AUSD is facing a $2.9 million dollar deficit, which could mean significant cuts.
