Dear Albany Community,
As we’re finishing the year, we’re also planning for next year. We want to let elementary parents know that we are moving to a uniform schedule for Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten, and a separate uniform schedule for first through fifth grade students. This early notice should help families in their planning for next year. More information regarding the exact bell schedule for next year will be provided in the next two weeks.
Bike Safety Programs
Some Marin elementary students participated in a Safe Routes to Schools bike safety education program this week. Students learned how to wear a helmet properly, the rules of the road for riding, and practiced their bike skills. This program was funded by the City of Albany, supplemented by the Alameda County Transportation Commission, and presented by Cycles of Change. Their Bike Rodeo and Drive Your Bike programs build student health, comfort, and independence with biking, plus they are fun! First and second graders enjoyed the Bike Rodeo on the school yard, and fifth graders participated in the Drive Your Bike program, with some going on an off-campus bike ride. Ocean View students got these programs last October, and Cornell and Albany Middle School plan on hosting programs next year. Alternating between sites allows all AUSD students to receive these programs.
Sustainability Improvements At Lunch Time
Lunch is looking a little different this year and we are excited about making changes that are better for the environment! In the fall, dispensers for organic milk were installed at all elementary schools. This eliminated a great deal of waste as well as the non-compostable single-serving containers. In the next few weeks, Sabina Feinberg, AUSD Executive Chef, will visit each elementary school to introduce students to using reusable utensils with school lunches.
Overall, the District is moving away from single-use disposables. Through a Stop Waste grant from Alameda County and some funding from California Department of Education, we were able to install a new high-efficiency dish machine which uses minimal water and washes dishes fast. This will greatly reduce our waste stream.
Student Artists Win Awards
Fifteen students from Albany High School won different awards from the Bay Area Creative Youth Foundation including Superior, Special, and Exceptional! The winning students won a cash prize and are recognized for their work in this online gallery. In addition, several students from Albany High art classes will have their work featured at the Abrams Claghorn Gallery on Solano Avenue. There will be an opening reception on May 11 from 4–7pm and the show will continue for several weeks. See the amazing work these young artists have created!

Querida comunidad de Albany,

自転車安全プログラム
