Dear Albany Community,
This week I shared a Special Message reaffirming our District’s commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their immigration status, gender identity, or other aspects of their identity. If you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, I encourage you to take a moment to do so.
This week we held meetings at all elementary schools and Albany Middle School to review assessment results for our Latino/a/e students and gather valuable feedback on how we can better support academic achievement for this historically underserved community. The families in attendance asked insightful questions about how we can implement the right supports to ensure our Multilingual learners, as well as our Latino/a/e students, make meaningful progress and how we can work effectively to close achievement gaps among our students.
As shared previously, I am excited to meet with community members to hear from you. I will be meeting with family groups such as the Affinity groups, PTAs, and School Site Councils. While I would love to be able to meet individually with everyone, as you might imagine, my time is limited. That said, I will be actively engaged at school sites, and will have more opportunities to meet with community members throughout the spring. Also, in the coming months, we will be inviting all families to participate in a collaborative planning process for the upcoming school year. This work will focus on initiatives that benefit all students while providing targeted support to those who need it most. I will share opportunities to engage in these efforts through these updates, and I encourage you to join us in shaping a brighter future for our students.
100th Day of School and Great Kindness Week
Next week is shaping up to be a busy one. Monday, January 27, is the 100th day of the school year and is celebrated at all elementary schools. Young students learn through projects how big 100 really is. Many classrooms will also be participating in the Great Kindness Challenge Week, January 27–31, whose theme this year is Kindness Moves. Students are challenged to complete acts of kindness. The Great Kindness Challenge also creates a continuum of kindness by offering home connections through a family edition of the checklist, available here with free signup.
Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution
California recognizes January 30 as Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution. Are you familiar with Oakland native Fred Korematsu? When Mr. Korematsu refused to voluntarily go to an internment camp during World War II, he was arrested and interred forcibly. Immediately after the war, he took his case to the U.S. Supreme Court, proposing that it was unconstitutional to deprive U.S. citizens of their freedom, but his case was defeated. Mr. Korematsu’s case was reopened in 1983 and his conviction overturned. In 1998 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, stating, “One person can make a difference, even if it takes 40 years.” Last year, Albany High School’s Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Youth Rising group created this marvelous slideshow about this remarkable local leader.
Can You Join The Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee?
Applications are still being accepted for the Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee. This important committee reviews all of the expenses charged to school bond accounts. With several bonds winding down, but the new Measure L bond program just beginning, this is a great opportunity for members of our community who can attend evening meetings roughly four times a year. Please see the Vacancy Notice for more information and to apply online. Many positions are open and you are needed!
TK/Kindergarten Information Night
The Transitional Kindergarten & Kindergarten (TK/K) Information Night program is coming on Wednesday, January 29, 6:30–7:30pm. This online Zoom webinar is the best way to find out all about these programs in Albany Unified. We encourage all parents of all incoming TK/K students to attend and need your help to spread the word. If you are acquainted with families who have young children please let them know about this helpful program.

Esta semana compartí un mensaje especial que reafirma el compromiso de nuestro Distrito de crear un entorno seguro e inclusivo para todos los estudiantes, independientemente de su estatus migratorio, identidad de género u otros aspectos de su identidad. Si aún no ha tenido la oportunidad de leerlo, lo invito a que se tome un momento para hacerlo.
Esta semana, celebramos reuniones en todas las escuelas primarias y en la escuela secundaria Albany para revisar los resultados de las evaluaciones de nuestros estudiantes latinos/a/e y recopilar comentarios valiosos sobre cómo podemos apoyar mejor el rendimiento académico de esta comunidad históricamente desatendida. Centésimo día de clases y Semana de la Gran Bondad
La semana que viene promete ser muy ajetreada. El lunes 27 de enero es el día 100 del año escolar y se celebra en todas las escuelas primarias.
