Dear Albany Community,

A deep sense of love and belonging is a fundamental human need—when it is absent, individuals and communities suffer. Albany Unified School District (AUSD) embraces its rich history as a diverse and vibrant community where many languages and cultures thrive. Diversity is not just acknowledged but celebrated, as it fosters creativity, innovation, and a powerful resistance against discrimination. At the same time, AUSD recognizes the historical and ongoing struggles with race, equity, and prejudice within our community and beyond. 


Our commitment is unwavering: every student, staff member, and family must feel safe, valued, and a true sense of belonging. Regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, immigration status, religion, age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, or any other identity, all members of our community deserve the opportunity, resources, and support to reach their full potential—without sacrificing who they are or limiting who they can become. 


AUSD has specific policies that continue to protect our students, staff, and families and we will remain committed to upholding them throughout the District. Some of these are:

Policies are the building blocks of how our schools operate, ensuring that inclusivity and respect are not just ideals but actionable commitments. My Special Message stated my commitment to ensuring every student knows that they are welcome, they belong, and they are supported within an inclusive environment at every Albany school. 


In addition to our own policies, there is state law, such as the SAFETY Act, which strengthens protections for LGBTQIA+ students by ensuring their right to privacy. Key provisions include protecting student privacy, preventing forced outing, creating support systems, safeguarding educators from retaliation for supporting LGBTQIA+ students, and affirming LGBTQIA+ rights. 


February is Black History Month

At Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, Student Board Member MacKenzie Shepherd read Proclamation 2024-25-04 (video link here), recognizing February as Black History Month. In Albany Unified, 4.3% of our students are Black/African American according to the 2024 California Dashboard, and 13.5% identify as two or more races. We recognize that when students do not see many peers or educators who share their racial or cultural identity, it can impact their sense of belonging and overall well-being.


There are supports in place at all Albany Unified schools to give every student that crucial safeguard of belonging. These include clubs, lessons in social-emotional learning, diverse reading materials and cultural perspectives in our books, and a strong focus on culturally responsive teaching practices. At Albany High there are the Young Men and Women of Color groups, which help our students find community, along with academic and social support. During February, we will focus on presenting authentic African-American history in an age-appropriate manner, as well as art and culture. The Black Parent Advisory Group will be hosting a Black History Month Celebration on February 13 (details below) featuring student performances. Don’t miss it!


Holocaust Survivor Visits Albany High

On Monday, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the 10th grade class at Albany High School had the incredible and life-changing opportunity to engage in a dialogue with Ralph Samuel, a survivor of the Holocaust. Ralph was a Kindertransport survivor who fled Germany in 1939 at the age of 7. For over an hour, Ralph spoke to 10th graders in the Little Theater, both presenting his story and allowing students to ask many questions. It was an extremely powerful event, and AHS is so grateful to have had this privilege and the opportunity to establish a relationship with Mr. Samuel for future visits.  

 

Free! Become An Immigration Rights Ambassador

A free workshop is being offered in Berkeley to prepare advocates and allies to give “know your rights” information to community members. It will cover how ICE operates and collects information and what to do during encounters with them. Visit La Peña Immigration Rights Committee website to learn more. The workshop will be on Saturday, February 8, 11am–1:00pm at La Peña and will be in English.


Lunar New Year Celebration

Although Lunar New Year was officially on Wednesday, Albany Unified will be bringing it into February as the Asian Pacific Islander Parent Engagement Group hosts a Celebration & Potluck on February 9, (details below). There will be games, crafts, Asian authors, and performances. Come and drum in the Year of the Snake!

Reafirmación de los derechos de los estudiantes, febrero es el Mes de la Historia Negra, una sobreviviente del Holocausto visita AHS, taller sobre derechos de inmigración y celebración del Año Nuevo Lunar

 

Estimada comunidad de Albany:

Un profundo sentido de amor y pertenencia es una necesidad humana fundamental; cuando falta, las personas y las comunidades sufren. Además de nuestras propias políticas, existen leyes estatales, como la Ley SAFETY , que fortalece las protecciones para los estudiantes LGBTQIA+ al garantizar su derecho a la privacidad. Febrero es el mes de la historia afroamericana

En la reunión de la Junta de Educación del martes, la miembro estudiantil de la Junta, MacKenzie Shepherd, leyó la Proclamación 2024-25-04 ( enlace de video aquí ), que reconoce febrero como el Mes de la Historia Negra. Sobreviviente del Holocausto visita Albany High School

El lunes, Día Internacional de Conmemoración en Memoria de las Víctimas del Holocausto, la clase de décimo grado de Albany High School tuvo la increíble y transformadora oportunidad de entablar un diálogo con Ralph Samuel, un sobreviviente del Holocausto. Ralph fue un sobreviviente del Kindertransport que huyó de Alemania en 1939 a la edad de 7 años. Se está ofreciendo un taller gratuito en Berkeley para preparar a los defensores y aliados para que brinden información sobre “conocer sus derechos” a los miembros de la comunidad. Celebración del Año Nuevo Lunar

Aunque el Año Nuevo Lunar fue oficialmente el miércoles, Albany Unified lo trasladará a febrero, ya que el Grupo de participación de padres de las islas del Pacífico asiático organizará una celebración y comida compartida el 9 de febrero (detalles a continuación). Habrá juegos, manualidades, autores asiáticos y actuaciones. ¡Ven y toca los tambores en el Año de la Serpiente!

大屠殺倖存者參觀奧爾巴尼高中

Holocaust Survivor अल्बानी उच्च भ्रमण गर्दछ

सोमबार, अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय प्रलय स्मरण दिवस, अल्बानी हाई स्कूलमा 10 औं कक्षाको कक्षामा प्रलयबाट बचेका राल्फ शमूएलसँग संवादमा संलग्न हुने अविश्वसनीय र जीवन परिवर्तन गर्ने अवसर थियो। राल्फ एक किन्डरट्रान्सपोर्ट बाँचेका थिए जो 1939 मा 7 वर्षको उमेरमा जर्मनीबाट भागेका थिए। एक घण्टा भन्दा बढीको लागि, राल्फले लिटिल थिएटरमा 10 कक्षाका विद्यार्थीहरूसँग कुरा गरे, दुवैले आफ्नो कथा प्रस्तुत गरे र विद्यार्थीहरूलाई धेरै प्रश्नहरू सोध्न अनुमति दिए। यो एक अत्यन्त शक्तिशाली घटना थियो, र AHS यो विशेषाधिकार र भविष्यका भ्रमणहरूको लागि श्री शमूएलसँग सम्बन्ध स्थापित गर्ने अवसर पाउँदा धेरै कृतज्ञ छ।
